Washington is located in the southwest corner of Utah 4 hours 30 minutes southwest of Salt Lake City and 10 minutes northeast of St. George, the county seat of Utah’s Dixie. The city was settled in 1857 by 10 Mormon families who were sent under the direction of Brigham Young to prepare the land for growing cotton. Over the past decade Washington has seen a lot of growth and the city has worked hard at keeping up with this growth and providing residents with a high quality of life in Utah’s Dixie.
As of the 2010 census the population of Washington was 18,761, an increase of 10,000 people since the 2000 census. The city has a racial make-up of 87.5% White, 8.4% Hispanic, 0.9% American Indian, 0.9% Asian, and 2.3% other races. The estimated median household income for Washington is $47,402 and is below the Utah average. Housing in the area has an estimated median value of $227,584 and a mean price of $267,004. Many new homes have been constructed in the last few years in order to keep up with the growing population. The cost of living index was at 88.2 as of March 2012 and is less than the U.S. average of 100.
Though many of the new residents are retirees come to enjoy the warmer weather of southern Utah, there are also quite a few families living in the city. For those families with school-age children, Washington is part of Washington County School District and is home to Riverside Elementary, Horizon Elementary School, Coral Canyon Elementary School, and Washington Elementary School. For middle school and high school, students attend schools in nearby St. George.
Located in the beautiful desert and red rock of southern Utah, there are many fun recreational opportunities just outside the city. Some local favorites include taking an ATV or Jeep adventure tour, shooting a bucket of balls or playing some holes at Coral Canyon Golf Club or Green Spring Golf Course, and hiking or biking up Snow Canyon.
