Vernal is located in the northeast corner of the state three hours east of Salt Lake City and is the largest city in Uintah County. Unlike many major Utah cities, Vernal was not settled by Mormon pioneers but began as an Indian Reservation. As of the 2010 census, the population of Vernal was 9,089. The city has a racial make-up of 83.1% White, 11.8% Hispanic, 1.9% American Indian, and 3.2% other races.
