Utah TV Service

Television used to be simple. You buy a TV set, plug in the antenna, and enjoy five channels of network TV. Those days have long since changed and choosing a TV provider is a lot more complicated. This page will give you a little information about the different Cable and Satellite television providers in Utah, and will go over some of the advantages of each. In Utah you really have only 3 choices for pay TV. You can choose Comcast Cable, or one of the Satellite providers Dish Network or Direct TV.

Utah Cable Television Servicers

Comcast Cable offers Cable TV for the huge majority of Utah. The problem with cable TV is that it is limited to distances where physical cables can go. In some areas it takes years to get cable lines run to a particular neighborhood. Cable companies must use city infastructure to run Cable Lines and have to pay for doing such. They pass these fees and taxes on to the consumer. Cable Taxes and fees in Utah are a lot more than the satellite TV providers.

Today Comcast provides more than just pay television services. They also provide high speed broadband internet, and digital phone services. They also offer two varieties of Cable TV, digital cable and the old technology Analog Cable.

Digital Cable - Digital cable essentially works the same way Satellite TV does. Each TV must have a receiver box which converts a digital cable signal into readable format for your television set. Digital Cable offers better picture, on screen guides, and interactive features. The disadvantage of Digital Cable is that each TV needs its own digital receiver box. Comcast charges $10 a month for each additional digital receiver box.

Analog Cable - Analog Cable is the technology that has been used for years. An analog television signal is sent through cable lines rather than just through air. The television then decodes the signal and displays it on your TV. Analog signals can be split, and one incoming cable line can hook up many TV's. Analog Cable is also better for old people who cannot understand technology. It is much easier for them to simply click up and down than scroll through an onscreen TV guide.

For years the Cable companies had a monopoly on the pay TV industry. They were the one and only pay TV provider, and service could only be obtained through them. There was almost always only one cable provider in any given area. They hiked up prices whenever they wanted and if you wanted to keep your specialized channels, you paid the additional price. Today Comcast and other Cable companies have competition from the small Satellite Dish providers Dish Network and Direct TV.

Satellite TV Servicers in Utah

There are two major Satellite TV carriers in Utah. Dish Network, and Direct TV.

Satellite TV is available to any house, anywhere in the country, but it may not be available in all apartments and rental properties. Satellite is all Digital and offers very nice features. Satellite TV is also usually less expensive than Cable TV after the promotional periods are over.

Satellite Television providers use digital technology. They broadcast digital TV to your house from the satellites high in the southern sky into a small 20' dish, and then that signal is decoded by a digital receiver box, or satellite receiver into readable format for your TV.

Dish Network offers the most affordable pay TV option in Utah. Their family package is just $19.99 a month. They have the best, and least expensive DVR service. Dish Network is the best digital TV option if you want to set up multiple Televisions, and if you want more high Definition programming. Nobody offers more HD channels than DISH TV.

Direct TV - Direct TV's basic package is not as cheap as DISH Networks, but it includes a lot more channels. Many of the channels people are used to with their basic cable, are not available in DISH's Family, or Top 100 package, but are available in Directs basic package. Direct TV is also the only television provider of the NFL network. Direct TV can be purchased through Qwest and discounts are given when it is bundled with Qwests DSL, and phone services.
