South Salt Lake is located in northern Utah just 7 minutes south of its parent, Salt Lake City. The city’s history is closely tied to the history of Salt Lake City and began in 1847 when Mormon settlers entered the Salt Lake Valley. As of the 2010 census, the population of South Salt Lake was 23,617 with a racial make-up of 56.5% White, 29.1% Hispanic, 4.9% Asian, 4.1% Black, 2.0% American Indian, and 3.4% other races.

There are approximately 8,022 households and 4,588 families living in the city. Of the households, 37.7% are married couples living together, 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, and 42.4% are classified as non-families. The estimated household income for South Salt Lake is $34,475, well below the Utah average. Housing in the area has an estimated value of $171,506 and a mean price of $170,452.

South Salt Lake has a large commercial and industrial base and is well connected to the main roadways in northern Utah. I-15, I-80, and SR-201 intersect in the northwestern portion of the city and U.S. 89 running north-to-south along State Street.

The city is part of Granite School District as is home to Lincoln Elementary, Wilson Elementary, and Granite Park Junior High. The closest hospital is the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, 3 miles away. The community offers many different classes and special programs for its residents including yoga, stress management, a variety of youth sports, Huck Finn Day, a chess tournament, daddy daughter dance, Easter egg hunt, mother son fiesta, and Freedom Festival.
