In the year 2000, there were 20,422 people, 7,413 households, and 5,381 families residing in Carbon county. The population density was (14/sq mi). There were 8,741 housing units at an average density of (6/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 91.08% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 4.75% from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. 10.27% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 7,413 households out of which 36.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% were married couples living together, 10.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% were non-families. 23.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the county, the population was spread out with 28.80% under the age of 18, 12.30% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100
